CHICAGO — The pace was so slow, so tedious at times that the loudest noise inside the United Center was often the bounce of the ball and the squeak of sneakers. Or it was the clang of the ball bouncing off the rim, which happened a lot in the Knicks' game Saturday against the Chicago Bulls. The two coaches, the Knicks' Mike Woodson and the Bulls Tom Thibodeau, raised their arms several times in bewilderment for much of the game. Sure, the Knicks and the Bulls played solid defense, but they were inefficient on offense.

In the final seven minutes, the Bulls made the key shots, grabbed the important rebounds and made their free throws to secure a 93-85 victory.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the Knicks, who played their second straight game without Carmelo Anthony, who cut his left middle finger diving for a loose ball in the fourth quarter of their victory over Charlotte on Wednesday.

Chicago's Marco Belinelli made the game's biggest shot, a 22-foot baseline jumper with less than two minutes left, to give the Bulls an 87-82 lead. Belinelli led the Bulls with 22 points and 3 steals. Luol Deng also had 22 points and 3 steals.

On their possession after Belinelli's basket, the Knicks passed the ball well enough to get a good look by Steve Novak. But his 3-point attempt rattled in an out. The Bulls' Joakim Noah then put the game away with a sweeping layup with 56 seconds left.

The Knicks (14-5) never found a flow on offense in the first half. The Bulls (11-8) are one of the best defensive teams in the league and the defended the Knicks' best offensive play: the pick-and-roll. Their efforts resulted in the Knicks scoring their fewest points in a game this season and registering their lowest shooting percentage (32). And after shooting 89 3-pointers in their previous two games, they attempted 23 against the Bulls and made just 8.

Raymond Felton, who led the Knicks with 27 points, needed 30 shots to do it. Felton made only nine of his attempts from the field. J.R. Smith scored 15 points. Tyson Chandler found himself in foul trouble for his aggressiveness on the offensive end.

One reason the Knicks struggled was because they didn't take care of the basketball. Before Saturday's game, the Knicks were leading the league in fewest turnovers with 10.8 per game. By halftime, the Bulls had forced them into 12 turnovers to just 7 assists.

They Knicks secured the ball better in the second half, but didn't have many opportunities for second-chance points, as they were outrebounded, 47-40. In the final seven minutes, the Knicks scored just 12 points.

REBOUNDS

Carmelo Anthony said he hoped to return Sunday night against the Denver Nuggets, the team that traded him to the Knicks in 2010, at Madison Square Garden. But he added that he would not hesitate to miss another game if he did not feel comfortable handling the ball. "You have to be smart," he said. "We haven't even played 20 games yet this season. It's definitely a long season, and I'm trying to stay away from injuries as best as possible. I really trust my teammates and feel as though they will take care of business." ... Ronnie Brewer, who played for the Bulls the last two seasons, returned to the United Center first the first time after the Bulls did not re-sign him in the off-season. In those two years, the Bulls had the best record in the league. "The city was great and the fans were great," Brewer said. "My time here was great. I'm looking forward to playing here tonight." Brewer was held scoreless and had two rebounds in 16:23. ... Chicago's Taj Gibson received two quick technical fouls in the second quarter, which prompted his ejection. Gibson's first technical came when he hit Steve Novak on the head with his elbow fighting for a rebound. As he walked to the bench, Gibson said obscenity to referee Derrick Stafford.
