CENTENNIAL, Colo. — An 18-year-old student who wounded a fellow student before killing himself at his suburban Denver high school had entered the building carrying a shotgun, a machete and three incendiary devices in his backpack and had ammunition strapped to his body, the authorities said on Saturday.
Sheriff Grayson Robinson of Arapahoe County said the gunman, Karl Pierson, was likely seeking retaliation against a faculty member, possibly a librarian, when he opened fire Friday at Arapahoe High School, but that Mr. Pierson had planned to hurt many people.
The sheriff said at a news conference that the teenager bought the pump-action shotgun legally on Dec. 6 at a local store.
Anyone over 18 is allowed to buy a shotgun in Colorado; only those over 21 can legally buy a handgun.
Also on Saturday, Sheriff Robinson identified the wounded student as Claire Esther Davis, 17. He said Ms. Davis was seated with a friend near the door from which Mr. Pierson entered the school; he shot her at point-blank range.
Ms. Davis, the sheriff said, was not a specific, intended target.
"She is an innocent young lady, and she was an innocent victim of an evil act of violence," Sheriff Robinson said. Ms. Davis remained hospitalized on Saturday in critical condition.
The sheriff said Mr. Pierson bought the ammunition on Friday and went to the school armed with multiple rounds. Sheriff Robinson said he believed that Mr. Pierson had intended to harm many more people, but ended up killing himself less than two minutes after entering the school because he knew a sheriff's deputy was closing in.
