Chicago's Joakim Noah, center, the Knicks' Tyson Chandler were among those ejected on Friday.
The Chicago Bulls on Friday night brought one of the stingiest defenses in the league into Madison Square Garden, where the Knicks had lost just once this season.
The Bulls did not seem intimated by their surroundings. They had an answer for everything the Knicks put in front of them in rolling to a 110-106 victory that was never close until a rally that came far too late. The Knicks trailed from the opening tipoff in an ugly game between division leaders that included 50 personal fouls, 11 technical fouls and 4 ejections.
The first person to leave the floor was Carmelo Anthony, who exited with 6 minutes 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Irritated by not getting foul calls when he had the ball, Anthony swung hard for the ball when the Bulls' Joakim Noah went for a layup. After the whistle, Anthony swung his arm violently near Noah's head, resulting in his second technical and an ejection.
The image of Anthony walking to the locker room created the loudest boos of the night, and the fans were not done voicing their displeasure toward the referees.
Coach Mike Woodson was ejected after receiving his second technical as he argued foul calls with 5:22 left in the game. The move by Woodson seemed to be his way of backing up Anthony, who complained with fury about the officiating once the Knicks (19-7) could not cut into the Bulls' double-digit lead late in the first quarter. Anthony received a technical foul in the first quarter for yelling at the referee John Goble after he did not draw a foul when he drove to the basket on a missed layup.
Noah, the Bulls' most aggressive defender, aggravated Tyson Chandler enough in the fourth quarter that Chandler head-butted Noah after the two fought for a rebound. The referees, after reviewing the play, made their strict ruling with 4:39 remaining: double technical for both players.
Before there was time for any yelling or complaining, the Bulls had already gotten under the Knicks' skin by opening the game on a 14-2 run.
The Bulls (15-10) were led by Luol Deng (29 points) and Marco Belinelli (22 points). Anthony scored a team-high 29 points, but needed 25 shots to do it. J. R. Smith added 26 points and 10 rebounds off the bench and Raymond Felton had 21 points.
Anthony did not play in the teams' first meeting on Dec. 8 in Chicago because of a deep cut on his finger. The outcome was much the same as the Bulls routed the Knicks, holding them to a season-low in points in a 93-85 loss. The final score that night was designed by Bulls Coach Tom Thibodeau and then executed by his Bulls, who slowed the pace of the game so much that fans at the United Center didn't cheer for long stretches. Chandler was in foul trouble throughout the game and Felton was left alone to shoot over and over. Felton finished with 27 points, but he needed 30 attempts.
"The game plan was to make Felton beat us," Joakim Noah said after that game.
It appeared the Bulls had a different plan Friday: Beat the Knicks up and make them lose their composure. The Bulls' mission, complete with three Knicks' ejections, was accomplished.
REBOUNDS
Amar'e Stoudemire had no ill effects after his second practice since being cleared by the Knicks' medical staff, according to Coach Mike Woodson.
